The Idea

All writers have unique processes and inspirations behind their art; and while music continues to change, some techniques stand the test of time. Works in Progress is a blog where I share my original songs and the work that went behind my creations; as well as the cultural roots tied to my music. I hope my posts inspire you to be creative and teach you something new.

MONTHLY FAVORITES

Song recommendations for the music I have been loving throughout the month.

My favorite ways to find new music is to look at suggestions from Spotify or Apple music and to hear them randomly in stores, movies, TV shows, tik toks, etc. I found all the music I have been obsessed with this month by these happy accidents.

WizTheMc

I discovered WizTheMc on a playlist suggested/created for me by Apple Music. The song they suggested was called For A Minute; the intro to the song reminded me of a Rex Orange County Song. I knew in the first ten seconds of the song I was going to really like it. I like this song because it describes the common fear of wanting a relationship to not be alone but not wanting to become vulnerable around someone. Another reason I like this song and WizTheMc is because his music is like when Christina and Meredith from “Grey’s Anatomy” dance out a bad day. No matter how sad the day, or the lyrics, you can’t help but sing and dance along. Some other songs I have really liked by him are The One and Fear of Heights off of his newest album, “Growing Teeth.”

Declan McKenna

I was scrolling through Pinterest one day when a Tik Tok popped up titled “Indie songs to blare in the car that isn’t Tongue Tied.” While I love Grouplove and their song Tongue Tied, the video piqued my interest. In the video, I found the song Brazil by Declan McKenna. Like For A Minute, I knew I would love Brazil within the first ten seconds of the song. Declan McKenna has a very unique tone, which made me love this song as I continued to listen. The person who made the Tik Tok was very right about the type of song this is. It’s the type of song you belt with your best friend while driving down the highway on a perfect summer night. My favorite line of this song is “I’m gonna burn your house down, to spread peace and love.” I like this line because I believe it speaks very strongly to the blind spots many people have. So many people work so hard against what they hate that they become that very thing. This line, to me, expresses that behavior.

If you like Brazil, I strongly suggest you listen to Why Do You Feel So Down, I Am Everyone Else, The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home, and You Better Believe by Declan McKenna.

Elton John - Still Standing

A few nights ago, I watched the movie “Sing” for the second time in my life. I don’t think I fully appreciated the film the first time I watched it because it is now one of my favorite movies. In “Sing,” Taron Egerton voices a young gorilla who does not want to continue his dad’s life of crime but instead wants to be a singer. In the finale of the movie, Egerton does a phenomenal version of Elton John’s Still Standing. While I already knew the icon Elton John and his famous song Egerton’s animated performance solidified something in me. I have made it my mission to learn how to play and sing Still Standing on the piano this year. My mother is a very talented pianist. I, however, would not grace myself with the same title. All the same, this song is so beautiful. The chords and words flow so well together and leave John’s message of resilience in everyone’s mind and heart when they hear it. Which is why I am determined to play this song.

I hope you enjoyed listening to and reading about this month's favorites. Thanks for yielding!
