I've always associated individual artists and songs with different types of weather. Now that the temperature has started to cool down and the sun is setting earlier, I've been going to my fall associated playlist more and more. Here are some of the artists and songs I've been loving throughout October.

  1. Noah Kahan

I will listen to Noah Kahan ALL fall, and in Kentucky, we don't get winter until as late as January sometimes. Noah Kahan just has cozy music. His album "Busyhead" was my first introduction to his music. I can say with confidence his two earlier EPs, "Hurt Somebody" and "Cape Elizabeth," fit the fall vibe just as much as "Busyhead" does. If you only listen to three songs by him, I recommend Save me or Mess from "Busyhead," Catastrophize from "Hurt Somebody," and from "Cape Elizabeth," it's tough to choose but, I think my favorite is Glue Myself Shut or Close Behind. I love to sing the harmonies to Glue Myself Shut and the vocals Kahan does in Close Behind. If you have the time, I highly recommend sitting down and listening to the entirety of "Cape Elizabeth" this EP has a lot of pain and emotion that the listener can feel. His vocals and guitar playing help accentuate the emotions he is relaying to his audience.

  1. Cigarette Daydreams (song) - Cage the Elephant

And

Bows (song) - Covey

To me, these songs encapsulate my ideal fall day. Bows is the early morning dog walk or work grind before the rain commences, shifting the day from productive to lazy. The song is like a whisper scream. It is simultaneously calm and chaotic, gentle, and harsh. The chord progression starts out very soft but then is layered and begins to echo almost. There is a constant harmony that is haunting and beautiful. This song's juxtaposition emphasizes the writer's lyrics and is exactly why I associate this song with the pre-rain lazy day period. Listening to this song transports you to the moment when you wake up earlier than you intended because you knew the day would be wet and dreary, and you just wanted to relax. However, you get up anyway and get some work done even though you don't want to.

Cigarette Daydreams guitar strum pattern and chord progression mimic the rhythm and sound of steady rain. The background piano brightens this downpour with fuzzy blankets, hot chocolate, and a warm puppy to cuddle with. The song lightens to a drizzle, and just when you think it's going to end, and the sun will come out, the precipitation comes down even harder before concluding.

  1. Fine Line (album) - Harry Styles

I will be the first to admit Harry Styles is very out of the ordinary for me. My sister has been obsessed with him since the One Direction era, and I never really got the hype. Recently, my sister and I went to get coffee one cold, rainy morning, and she played "Fine Line" our whole drive. Listening to it, I realized, like Noah Kahan represents a fall day,

the album fits a rainy day aesthetic, to me. If you choose three songs to listen to off this album, I highly recommend Falling, Golden, and Sunflower Vol.6.

If you'd like, you can check out my rainy/fall playlist here. I hope you like it and feel the autumnalness of these songs too.

Until next time,

thanks for yielding!

Alexis
